One of the most important parts of our bodies is the central nervous system. This system is composed of the brain and the spinal cord. Without the support provided by these nerves, the rest of the body ceases to function. To make things worse, any injury to these body parts is generally unable to heal and may result in a permanent disability.
What Are Spinal Cord Injuries?
The vertebral bones in the spinal column protect the spinal cord. As resilient as these bones are, blunt force can fracture, split, or shatter them. Something as simple as falling on one’s back can cause these bones to break leaving the spinal cord at risk. The spinal cord is nothing more than a bundle of nerves and the slightest contact can cause immense pain and severe damage.
These injuries can occur under almost any circumstances. Any opportunity for a violent collision carries a potential for harm. Common examples include:
- Slips and falls
- Car and 18-wheeler accidents
- Pedestrian accidents
- Industrial accidents
- Assaults
