The month of October brings the beauty of autumn and the transition of seasons, but it also carries a sobering statistic: the highest number of pedestrian accidents in Texas in 2022, according to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). As daylight hours decrease and visibility becomes a challenge, the safety of both pedestrians and drivers is at risk. In response to this alarming trend, TxDOT launched its “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” campaign in October, recognizing it as National Pedestrian Safety Month, with a mission to protect the community from the disheartening data of the previous year.

While pedestrians account for just 1% of all crashes in Texas, the tragic reality is that they make up a staggering 19% of all traffic-related fatalities. Over the past five years, pedestrian traffic fatalities in the state have surged by 29.6%, reflecting a nationwide trend of rising pedestrian accidents. In 2022 alone, Texas witnessed a troubling 5,764 traffic crashes involving pedestrians, leading to 829 devastating deaths and 1,526 severe injuries. TxDOT has taken proactive measures to address the heightened danger in October with its “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” campaign.

Marc Williams, the Executive Director of TxDOT, emphasized that the responsibility to keep our roads safe during reduced daylight hours falls on both drivers and pedestrians. For drivers, the campaign underscores the importance of remaining alert and actively seeking pedestrians, especially in moments of distraction. It’s a call to action for drivers to be cautious and considerate, particularly as daylight diminishes. Pedestrians are also encouraged to take proactive measures to increase their visibility to potentially inattentive drivers. This includes wearing reflective clothing, using crosswalks, and avoiding distractions like texting while walking.

TxDOT’s campaign employs a multifaceted approach to raise awareness and promote pedestrian safety. It utilizes various media channels, including television and radio spots, billboards, and digital advertising. In addition, over 30 walking billboards have been installed in towns with the highest fatalities from pedestrian-related traffic accidents. TxDOT’s “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” pedestrian safety campaign is an integral part of the broader initiative known as #EndTheStreakTX. This initiative encourages drivers to make safer choices while behind the wheel to help end the streak of daily deaths on Texas roadways.

The somber fact that November 7, 2000, marked the last deathless day on Texas roads serves as a poignant reminder of the need for continued vigilance and commitment to road safety. As October arrives and daylight dwindles, McCraw Law Group advises all Texans to heed the call of TxDOT’s “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” campaign. By staying vigilant and following safety guidelines, we can collectively reduce the alarming statistics of pedestrian accidents in our state.
